February 6th to 8th - With the rain last week, it was probably fair enough to describe the opening weekend of the league as a damp squib. The match between Shamrock Rovers and Dundalk fell foul of the weather in Tallaght. It's been rearranged for Monday, February 23rd when they'll try again. Derry City, seen by many as the team most likely to challenge Rovers for the title, were behind to Sligo heading in the final ten minutes. Jad Hakiki gave Sligo the lead on the half hour mark but late strikes from Alex Bannon and Josh Thomas gave Tiernan Lynch's side a winning start to the season. The honour of scoring the first goal of the season went to John Martin of Shelbourne - Joey O'Brien's side were unable to hold onto their lead though with Tommy Lonegan's goal for Waterford ensuring both sides had to settle for a point on opening night. There was late drama in Eamon Deacy Park as Drogheda scored an injury time winner through Jago Godden to beat Galway one-nil. The much hyped Aviva opener between Bohemians and St Patricks Athletic ended scoreless with neither team able to find a breakthrough in front of an alleged crowd of 21,000 souls. Caroline Carroll is our early leader - two ten pointers helped her to a score of 30 points, Alan Leahy and Gary Parsons are next best - they share second place with 25 points each. After that we have a whole host of people on 20 points. Hopefully a few bonus points are scored next weekend to separate the what from the chaff - full details below: |
February 13th and 14th - Drogheda United top the Premier Division with two wins from two games. Kevin Doherty's side followed up last week's win in Galway with a two-nil at home to Waterford. Both goals came inside the first ten minutes - Shane Farrell opened the scoring with Mark Doyle then earning a couple of bonus points for those that chose him with the second. There was late drama once again in Derry. The hosts needed a 98th minute penalty from Michael Duffy to earn a point against promoted Dundalk. The Lilywhites were ahead twice through Eoin Kenny and Gbemi Arubi but goals from Patrick McClean and Duffy gave Tiernan Lynch's side a point. Shamrock Rovers usually make a slow start but two postponed games to start the season is a first, even for them. Overnight rain meant the game away to Shelbourne was called off. Likewise in Inchicore, where St Patricks Athletic and Galway fell foul of the weather. The weekend's action concluded in Sligo where Colm Whelan scored a second half hat-trick as Bohemians beat the home side by four-goals to nil. Whelan was joined on the scoresheet by Dayle Rooney who opened the scoring in the second minute. All five games in the first division went ahead. Cork City, hot favourites for an immediate return to the top division needed an injury time winner from Ruari Keating to beat Treaty United one-nil. There was a surprise result further down the road where Cobh were beaten three-nil at home to Wexford. The penalty king, Max Murphy, was on the scoresheet in that one. Athlone kicked off their season with a two-one win at home to Finn Harps. Richard Ferizaj opened the scoring in the Carlisle Grounds but Bray Wanderers had to settle for a point when Dean George scored an equaliser for Longford Town early in the second half. The students of UCD recovered from a half-time deficit to beat Kerry two-one. Carl Lennox and Ciaran Behan scored in six second half minutes to give them a winning start. It's a second week at the top for Caroline Carroll who leads on 58 points after the weekend's games. An excellent score of 39 points sees Richard Johnston climb to second place. Former winner, Andy Dunne, and newcomer Ste Clarke share third place, a point further back. Carl Toner and Gerry Draper share fifth place - full details below: |

February 20th and 21st - Dawson Devoy's free kick was the difference between the sides at the Brandywell as Bohemians beat Derry City. His goal sent the Phibsboro side top of the table, unbeaten after three games. Drogheda United needed Conor Keeley's last minute header at Oriel Park to give Kevin Doherty's side a point in the Louth Derby. They join Bohs on seven points at the top. It looked for a long time like Danny Mullen's goal was going to give Dundalk the bragging rights in their first home game since returning to the Premier Division. Shamrock Rovers finally got their season underway with the visit of St Patricks Athletic. Michael Noonan came off the bench to open the scoring with possibly his first touch of the game. Adam Brennan scored the second late on to cap a man-of-the-match performance on his home debut. The two-nil win means Rovers are the only team with a 100% record in the top division ; ) Shelbourne have yet to record a win this season - a second draw in two games came at home to a battling Galway United side. Kris Twardek opened the scoring for the visitors but Harry Wood earned a point from the spot for the home side. It finished goalless in Waterford where the home side and Sligo Rovers failed to find a goal between them. In the first division, Cork City made it two win from two with a four-one win in Wexford. Sean Maguire scored twice with Hans Mpongo and Ruairi Keating also on the scoresheet. Athlone Town also made it two wins from two - they beat Kerry one-nil in Mounthawk Park with a very late goal from Cillian Tollett. Bray Wanderers picked up a good three points on the road in Limerick. Billy O'Neill scored the only goal as Treaty United were beaten one-nil. Finn Harps picked up their first win of the season beating UCD two-one in Ballybofey. The weekend's action concluded with a two-one win for Cobh Ramblers on Saturday night - their win in Longford being their first of the season after disappointment at home to Wexford last week. A fifty point haul from the weekend's games saw Gary Donnelly move into first place in the February competition. He has a five point lead over Caroline Carroll heading into the final week of the month. Carl Toner and Sean Judd share third place a further point back - Sean's score of 54 points was the highest this weekend. Andy Dunne completes the top five for February so far - full details below: |

February 27th - Bohemians' great start to the season continued with a three-two win at home to old rivals Shamrock Rovers. Connor Parsons opened the scoring in the first half. Colm Whelan then scored his fourth goal of the season with a second half penalty before Ross Tierney put the icing on the cake with the third. Two Rovers' goals in injury time from Pico Lopes and Aaron Greene gave the scoreline some respectabilty but in truth Bohs were better all over the pitch once they scored the first. Derry City are second in the table. When Tommy Lonergan scored from the spot to give Waterford a two-nil lead, it looked like another disappointing home result. However, Michael Duffy had other ideas, scoring a hat trick to turn the result on its head with Dipo Akinyemi also scoring to give Tiernan Lynch's side a four-two win. Drogheda United remain on seven points - they were ahead early on against Shelbourne but goals from Sam Bone and a Harry Wood penalty saw the points travel back down to Tolka Park. St Patricks Athletic picked up their first win (and goals) of the season with a comprehensive four-nil win at home to Dundalk. The Inchicore side had four different scorers - Romal Palmer, Sean Hoare, Zach Elbouzedi and Aidan Keena were all on the scoresheet. The final game in the top division on Friday night was settled by Jimmy Keohane's first half strike - Galway United picked up their first win of the season at home to bottom side Sligo Rovers. Cork City made it three wins from three with a one-nil win at home to Bray Wanderers in the first division. Sean Maguire scored the only goal of the game in the first half, making it three goals for the season for him. Athlone Town are second in the table - they dropped points for the first time this season after a two-all draw at home to Wexford. UCD were the only other winners in the first division - Ciaran Behan scored both goals as the Students beat Treaty United two-nil in Belfield. Cobh Ramblers and Finn Harps shared the points after a one-all draw in St Colmans Park. It was the same scoreline in Mounthawk Park where Kerry and Longford couldn't be separated. The first monthly competition of the season ended up with Keith Ryan and Sean Judd sharing first place. They both finished on 126 points. Newcomer Johnny Waldron finished third with 121 points with fellow debutant Noel O'Brien in fourth place a couple of points back. Fifth places was shared by Andy Dunne, Craig Whelan and Kevin Murphy (who scored an excellent 59 points this week): |
